The Communist Party will now be contesting at least seven seats in the coming election: Glasgow North West, Newcastle East, Sheffield Brightside, Birmingham Perry Barr and/or Selly Oak, Croydon, Alyn & Deeside and at least one seat in south Wales. All Party branches and EC members are being allocated to a contest with a view to them giving what physical, logistical and financial support they can. Notification of the allocation made by the Political Committee will follow shortly.
We are clear about why the Communist Party calls for a Labour victory over the Tories in the General Election. A Labour government may be more susceptible to pressure, at least in some important areas, than a Tory one. Public spending cuts may be less vicious. Certainly, the Tories and their main financial backers are more likely to try to introduce anti-trade union measures in ‘essential services’, the public sector, TUC training and workplace learning programmes, use of union funds and in terms of trade union representatives’ facility time. And thirdly, we want New Labour where we can see them and aim to put them under pressure—in office, rather than in opposition where they could pretend to move to the left in an effort to maintain their disastrous leadership of the Labour Party.
With authority from the EC, the Political Committee has also agreed to applications from the Party’s Northern District Committee to support comrade John Metcalfe as local labour movement and socialist candidate in Carlisle, and from the Greater Midlands DC to support Dave Nellist (Trade Union and Socialist Coalition) in Coventry North East and Salma Yaqoob (Respect) in Birmingham Hall Green. Other Party organisations wishing to support non-Labour candidates in their area should apply to Party Centre for consideration by the EC or PC as soon as possible.
Yours for Communism
